The project seamlessly integrates form, external views, and materials to create a visually captivating and functional structure. With a focus on connectivity and collaboration, the design concept aligns with the mission of the University College London (UCL) to foster interdisciplinary learning and research.
The building's form combines geometric shapes and fluid lines, resulting in a captivating architectural composition. A glass façade wraps around the structure, allowing natural light to flood the interior spaces and providing panoramic views of the surroundings. Dynamic interplay of curves and angular elements adds intrigue to the exterior, enhancing the overall aesthetic.
An integral aspect of the design is the emphasis on external views. Expansive windows and open balconies offer unobstructed vistas of Stratford and the wider London skyline, fostering a strong connection with the environment and inspiring creativity and engagement.
Throughout the design process, we employed a thoughtful integration of materials. The extensive use of glass not only ensures transparency but also reflects the surrounding landscape, seamlessly blending the structure with its natural surroundings. Complemented by steel elements that add contemporary elegance and concrete elements providing a sense of solidity and permanence, the materials contribute to the building's overall aesthetic and functionality.
The UCL East building, designed and developed during our time at Stanton Williams, showcases our deep understanding of architectural principles and the transformative power of design in promoting learning. It stands as an inviting and visually captivating space that embodies UCL's commitment to innovation and collaboration.
